Our Penland Story

Amy’s first experience at Penland was through a weaving concentration in the Spring of 2012. She registered with little weaving experience and even less knowledge of Penland in hopes of channeling her creative energy. What began as eight-weeks of learning and exploration forged her relationship with the process and craft in which she wholeheartedly invests herself. This was the beginning of her life as a weaver and textile artist, and an ongoing relationship with Penland. Amy found herself back at Penland in Fall of 2014 as studio assistant for Beth Ross Johnson. Amy found herself back at Penland in Summer of 2017 as a seasonal employee for the Supply Store.

Carter found herself at Penland for the first time as an intern in Summer 2017, where she struck up a close, lasting, and awesome friendship with Amy. Her time there inspired her pursuit as an artist, reinforcing her love of photography. However, her introduction to textiles through friends, educators, and staff at Penland changed her outlook on and practice of art. Carter returned to Penland in the summer of 2021 as the Sales & Purchasing Coordinator at the Gallery.

Penland is a hive of knowledge, of creativity, of pure human existence, and it is so alive.

We are excited to contribute to and be a part of the community.
